Mercedes pulls Monaco penalty review, leaves Russell out of points

Mercedes confirmed on Friday it has withdrawn the Right of Review request concerning the penalties imposed on George Russell during the Monaco GP. The team said discussions with the FIA and Formula One Management convinced them that overturning the drive‑through or securing compensation would be impossible. Consequently, the appeal scheduled for 20 June was cancelled and preserve its focus on the championship battle.

Russell received an initial pit‑lane speeding penalty, then a drive‑through while serving it, dropping him out of the top ten. Mercedes had filed the review after Alpine successfully proved Pierre Gasly’s two penalties were based on faulty timing data admitted by FOM. That admission reopened scrutiny of all similar penalties at Monaco. The incident highlighted timing vulnerabilities that could affect future races.

The withdrawal leaves the Monaco result unchanged, with Gasly back on the podium and Russell stuck outside the points. Red Bull and McLaren have already lodged appeals to the International Court of Appeal, meaning the controversy will continue through the legal process rather than on track. Mercedes judges further pursuit as serving no benefit to team or sport, and no further sporting reparations are expected, and the team will shift resources to upcoming Grands Prix.
