OpenAI Disrupts 'Corrupt Comment' Operation

OpenAI has identified and disrupted a coordinated operation, dubbed "Corrupt Comment," that used its API to generate critical comments targeting the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK), founded by the late Alexei Navalny. The operation involved creating fake X (formerly Twitter) accounts, primarily in December 2023, to post these English-language comments, often in reply to Russian-language posts by FBK members and associates.

These generated comments focused on questioning the FBK's transparency and criticizing its leadership. The fake accounts, largely with zero followers and no replies, often used generic scenery or AI-generated profile pictures. OpenAI's analysis indicated the operation did not use its models to analyze social media content for contextually relevant replies, but rather to push a consistent, negative message.

The impact of "Corrupt Comment" was assessed as minimal. Most of the identified X accounts had no followers, and their posts received no engagement. The English-language comments were typically outnumbered by unrelated Russian-language replies, suggesting the operation failed to significantly influence online discourse.
