OpenAI has disrupted a Russia-origin influence operation, dubbed "Stop News," that utilized its AI models to generate content in English, French, and Russian. This operation employed ChatGPT to create short comments, long-form articles, and images, which were then disseminated across various websites and social media platforms. The long-form articles, presented as news from outlets in Africa and the UK, were posted on websites like britishtalks[.]com and euronewstop[.]co[.]uk.

Short comments appeared on X, and Russian content promoted commercial services. The operation was notable for its prolific use of AI-generated images, often in a cartoon style, to enhance engagement. Despite using modern AI, the content received low engagement.

A unique aspect was the establishment of "information partnerships" with UK entities, including a school and a church, the purpose and establishment of which remain unclear. OpenAI has shared indicators with relevant authorities and platforms regarding this activity, assessing it as a Category Three impact operation.
