OpenAI has banned four clusters of accounts linked to the Russian influence operation "Doppelganger." This operation utilized AI models to generate anti-Ukraine content, including social media comments, translations, and website copy in multiple languages.

One cluster generated short comments in English, French, German, Italian, and Polish, often posted alongside memes and videos on platforms like 9GAG and X. These comments, sometimes generated using OpenAI's models, aimed to portray Ukraine and Western allies negatively. Another cluster translated Russian articles, some of which appeared on the Doppelganger-attributed website rrn.media.

A third cluster focused on French articles for the website franceeteu.today, while a fourth operated in German, using content from grenzezank.com for Facebook posts. The content predominantly criticized Ukraine, the US, NATO, and the EU, while promoting a positive view of Russia.

Despite attempts to evade detection, including using services linked to Russian and Czech companies, the operation's engagement with authentic audiences appears minimal. OpenAI assessed the activity as Category 2 on their Breakout Scale, indicating posting across multiple platforms without significant audience engagement.
