Planetary scientists from Freie Universität Berlin have published two new studies in Science Advances with promising discoveries about the potential for life on Saturn’s icy moon Enceladus. Professor Frank Postberg and Dr. Nozair Khawaja contributed to research showing that Enceladus’s subsurface ocean is more accessible for analysis than previously thought, and that certain microorganisms could tolerate its conditions better than assumed. The studies reveal that ice grains ejected from Enceladus’s cryovolcanic plumes freeze slowly, allowing salts and organic materials to segregate within droplets, making it easier to detect biosignatures.

Enceladus is considered one of the most promising places to search for extraterrestrial life due to its global ocean, hydrothermal activity, and direct sample availability via Cassini spacecraft data. These findings increase the probability of finding evidence of life on the moon and suggest that planned spacecraft missions could identify life more easily than expected.
