Apple Maps Renames Lake Ontario to Lake America

Apple Maps has begun renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America" for users in the United States, following an order from President Trump as part of an ongoing trade dispute with Canada. The change was first spotted by Bloomberg and applies only to U.S.-based Apple Maps users. Canadian users will still see the original name "Lake Ontario," while users elsewhere will see both names listed.

Google Maps had already implemented the same renaming several days prior, citing its policy of using names assigned by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that Trump had directly contacted Apple regarding the name change, prompting Apple to follow suit.

MapQuest has refused to rename the lake, resulting in a surge in app downloads. The update is rolling out gradually, with some users still seeing "Lake Ontario" while others see "Lake America." This is not the first time Apple has made such a change; last year, Apple also renamed the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America" on Apple Maps following a similar Trump order.
