Ford's vice president of advanced vehicle projects, Alan Clarke, explained the decision to integrate native Apple Maps into the automaker's new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) Platform, starting with the Fathom. In an interview with Green Cars, Clarke stated Ford evaluated Apple, Google, and other providers, ultimately selecting Apple Maps for its performance, quality, and cost optimization. He noted Apple Maps has improved significantly in recent years and praised the Apple team's flexibility in ensuring the best customer experience.

Clarke emphasized the critical need for tight integration between the maps provider and vehicle systems for EVs. Factors like range estimation, battery preconditioning, charging navigation, elevation data, weather, and real-time charger availability required a robust solution. Ford determined Apple offered the "best solution" for these complex requirements, adding that the large display showcasing Apple Maps will be a major "wow factor" for customers.

Importantly, Ford is not adopting CarPlay Ultra for the Fathom. Instead, the vehicle will feature native Apple Maps integration within Ford's own software platform, alongside standard CarPlay and Android Auto support. This allows drivers to choose between Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, and other third-party navigation apps via CarPlay.
