Mercedes instructed both drivers to stop the "yo-yo" racing -- fearing they were allowing Verstappen back in the fight -- and Russell retained his lead. But an opportunity forAntonelli arrived on Lap 28 when Lance Stroll broke down in his Aston Martin and the virtual safety car was deployed. Antonelli, on the less durable medium tire, was called in by Mercedes for a pit stop. Russell, despite being the leading car, was on the harder compound and left out. And so the race began. Antonelli was 14 seconds behind when he left the pits and with 10 laps to go Russell's advantage had been trimmed to just five seconds. Russell was looking increasingly vulnerable.

"Just let me drive", Russell said over the radio. "I am driving as quick as I can."

Mercedes told Russell to take "no risks" with his tires andAntonelli was in striking range. Antonelli thought he lost his chance when he ran through the sand trap with four laps to go but he got his man the next time around to secure a stunning fightback win -- his seventh of the season. Earlier, Leclerc lost control of his car on the exit of the high-speed Curva Parabolica as he dueled with Mc Laren's Oscar Piastri in the opening stages.
