SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won now warns the global memory shortage could persist until 2030, extending earlier projections that expected it to ease by late 2028. The Korea Times reports Chey cited wafer capacity constraints as the root cause, explaining securing new production lines takes four to five years. Industry-wide supply shortfalls are expected to remain at over 20 percent through 2030, significantly impacting tech manufacturers reliant on DRAM and HBM memory. SK hynix, the group's memory division, is focusing on stabilizing pricing amid the crisis but has not outlined a timeline for resolution.

The company also confirmed it will not pursue fabs outside South Korea, prioritizing domestic infrastructure for faster response times. SK hynix is reportedly avoiding exclusive HBM focus to prevent broader DRAM shortages that could ripple through the entire tech industry. This development underscores the prolonged nature of the supply chain challenges facing memory suppliers and their customers.
