Silicon Motion has launched the SM8008, a PCIe Gen 5 x4 NVMe controller designed specifically for enterprise boot drives and power-sensitive storage applications. Built on TSMC's 6 nm process, the controller delivers up to 14 GB/s sequential throughput and over 2.3 million random IOPS while maintaining active power consumption under 5 W. The SM8008 supports the OCP Hyperscale NVMe Boot SSD Specification and multiple form factors including M.2, U.2, E1.S, and E3.S.

The controller addresses growing demand for power-efficient boot storage in hyperscale data centers, where even small power savings across thousands of servers can significantly reduce operating costs. It features inline ECC architecture with single-channel DDR4-3200 or LPDDR4-3200 DRAM to optimize system-level power efficiency and bill of materials costs. The SM8008 also supports the latest NVMe 2.0a protocol and comes with enterprise-grade security features including TCG Opal 2.0 encryption, AES-256 hardware acceleration, and NSA 2.0 readiness.

Early adopters ATP and Exascend have already integrated the SM8008 into their next-generation enterprise SSD platforms. The controller's combination of high performance, power efficiency, and comprehensive security makes it well-suited for AI and cloud infrastructure deployments where boot storage reliability is critical. This launch strengthens Silicon Motion's enterprise portfolio as data centers continue expanding PCIe Gen 5 infrastructure.
