Kioxia today began shipping evaluation samples of UFS 5.0 embedded flash memory, a JEDEC-standardized technology designed for next-generation mobile devices with on-device AI capabilities. The new standard, currently under development by JEDEC, targets smartphones requiring significantly faster storage performance than existing UFS versions. M-PHY 6.0 and UniPro 3.0 protocols enable theoretical speeds up to 46.6 Gbps per lane, delivering approximately 10.8 GB/s of effective read/write performance with dual lanes.

This development addresses the growing demand for ultra-fast storage in AI-powered mobile devices. By adopting UFS 5.0, manufacturers can potentially reduce device boot times and accelerate AI processing tasks that require rapid data access. The standard's focus on embedded solutions suggests broader applications beyond smartphones, including automotive and IoT systems where consistent high-speed storage is critical.

Kioxia's early samples mark a significant step toward commercial availability, though full standardization and device integration remain pending. Industry observers note this could reshape mobile storage hierarchies, though practical consumer impact will depend on manufacturer adoption timelines and final device specifications.
