Kioxia Launches GP1 High‑IOPS SSD for AI

KIOXIA America, Inc. announced the KIOXIA GP1 Series PCIe 6.0 NVMe SSD, the first product in its GP Series of Super High IOPS SSDs optimized for GPU direct access. Building on earlier GP Series technology, the GP1 delivers up to 10 million random read IOPS using KIOXIA XL‑FLASH generation 2 flash memory, enabling flash‑based memory extension to meet AI infrastructure demands.

Evaluation samples will be available to select customers by the end of 2026, and the GP1 will be showcased at FMS: the Future of Memory and Storage, August 4‑6 in Santa Clara, California. Designed to support emerging AI storage architectures, it extends High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) as a fast flash media tier, allowing AI systems to access larger datasets at a lower cost than adding more HBM4, while improving GPU utilization.

GP1 SSDs leverage XL‑FLASH generation 2 low‑latency flash to deliver higher IOPS with finer‑grained 512‑byte access and lower power per I/O compared to conventional TLC SSDs. The architecture scales from today’s 10 million random read IOPS to future generations targeting up to 100 million IOPS.

Key features include PCIe 6.0 and NVMe 2.2 specs, up to 10 million random read IOPS at a 512‑byte block size, E3.S/E1.S 9.5/15 mm form factors with cold‑plate liquid cooling in E3.S, and up to 50 DWPD endurance. Neville Ichhaporia, senior VP and GM of the SSD business unit, says the AI memory wall is a critical challenge and XL‑FLASH uniquely delivers the high performance and low latency needed to support GPUs as a memory extension tier, at a significantly lower cost per gigabyte than expanding in‑node HBM or DRAM.
