KDE has pushed version 6.6 into public beta, delivering a substantial update for Linux desktop users. The most significant change is the new Plasma Login Manager, which replaces the long-standing SDDM display manager. This shift brings improved multi-monitor and HDR support, alongside better power management and screen reader integration.

Beyond the new login system, the beta includes practical features like connecting to Wi-Fi via QR codes, OCR within the Spectacle screenshot tool, and better USB access for sandboxed applications. Performance tweaks promise reduced memory usage and fixes for leaks, while accessibility options such as slow keys on Wayland are also included.

This release continues KDE's push to modernize its stack following the transition to Plasma 6 last year. The full launch is scheduled for February 17, giving users roughly a month to test the changes. KDE Plasma remains a primary alternative to GNOME for users seeking a highly configurable desktop experience.
