KDE Plasma 6.7 Beta Adds Open Source Bigscreen Mode for HTPCs

The KDE development team has released the Plasma 6.7 Beta, introducing Plasma Bigscreen — a new desktop interface built specifically for home theater PC setups. This open-source alternative to Valve's Steam Big Picture mode offers a controller-friendly experience without requiring users to add applications through Steam.

Plasma Bigscreen uses the same Kwin, Qt, KDE Frameworks, and Kirigami underpinnings as the standard desktop Plasma environment. This means users can install apps directly from their distribution's package manager or Flathub, rather than being locked into Steam's ecosystem. The interface features a row-based layout with quick access to settings, mirroring SteamOS, while maintaining full integration with KDE's theming and customization options.

The full release of KDE Plasma 6.7 is scheduled for June 2026, with the beta now available for download from KDE.org. The addition of Bigscreen positions Plasma as a more flexible option for Linux users who want a TV-friendly interface without sacrificing the ability to run standard desktop applications.
