Imagination Technologies has demonstrated its PowerVR D-Series GPU running 3DMark Fire Strike, a demanding DirectX 11 benchmark, on Windows. This marks a significant shift for the company, which previously focused on mobile and embedded graphics. The achievement proves the D-Series can handle real desktop-style workloads and gaming workloads, not just lightweight tasks. DXD is the first D-Series product offering hardware-based DirectX 11 Feature Level 11_0 support.

This breakthrough enables Imagination to target broader markets, including desktop graphics and cloud gaming, supporting DirectX 11, 12, Vulkan, OpenGL, and OpenCL. While Imagination's E-Series already supports DirectX 12, the D-Series' DX11 capability suggests future DirectX 12 enablement. The move signals a push into the competitive desktop GPU space, leveraging its PowerVR architecture alongside AMD's GCN and NVIDIA's CUDA as influential designs.

Chinese manufacturers like Xiang Dixian have already adapted Imagination's IP, showcasing the Fuxi A0 graphics card at ICCAD 2025.
