Apex Legends Ending Nintendo Switch 1 Support in August

Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment are ending support for Apex Legends on the original Nintendo Switch on August 4, 2026. Season 29 will be the last update for the handheld console. Players can still access all features, including in-app purchases, until the servers shut down. This move comes as the Switch ages, with the newer Switch 2 already available.

Players' progress, in-game items, and currency will carry over to their accounts on the Nintendo Switch 2. This is due to the cross-progression feature. After August 4th, players will no longer receive any updates on the original Switch. This decision reflects the typical lifecycle of video game support on older hardware, as newer consoles are released.

Since its launch on the Switch in March 2021, Apex Legends has offered a free-to-play battle royale experience. The game has been available on the Switch 2 since August 2025. This allows the developers to focus resources on the platforms with the largest player bases. Players can transfer progress to other platforms besides the premium currency.

This shift likely aims to optimize resources and focus on the Switch 2, which has better hardware. As the original Switch ages, maintaining support becomes more challenging. The sunsetting of support is a common practice in the gaming industry, especially for free-to-play titles, as hardware evolves and new consoles emerge.
