Xbox Cuts 3,200 Jobs, Spins Off Studios

Microsoft announced 3,200 layoffs across five Xbox studios today, targeting a platform team that grew 40% larger since the generation began while player counts and playtime fell. The cuts threaten development of Project Helix, the hybrid console designed to run generic PC games alongside Xbox titles. Xbox leadership acknowledged the expanded team no longer aligns with current engagement metrics.

The company is unwinding its 2018 acquisition spree. Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions will regain independence with full IP control, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have been sold to unnamed buyers. Arkane Studios is exploring "strategic options" to exit Xbox ownership. Microsoft admitted these smaller studios lost 64 cents for every dollar invested annually, concluding it isn't "the best home for every type of studio."

Meanwhile, Mojang (Minecraft) and King (Candy Crush) now report directly to Xbox leadership, reflecting their disproportionate share of monthly players and demographic reach. Investment across Activision, Blizzard, Bethesda, and Xbox Game Studios will concentrate on "higher priority projects," signaling a retreat from broad portfolio ownership toward live-service heavyweights.
