Valve contractor NaKyle Write has released a DIY guide for the Inkterface e-ink panel that appeared in the original Steam Machine announcement video but never reached retail. The GitLab repository provides a complete bill of materials and firmware instructions for builders comfortable with a soldering iron and Linux AppImage packaging.

The bill of materials totals roughly $88.15 using Valve's suggested suppliers, though cheaper alternatives likely exist on AliExpress. The 5.83-inch e-ink display accounts for $49.95 of that cost. The panel operates as a standalone peripheral — it doesn't require the Steam Machine to function — and pairs via BLE to a companion app that currently must be compiled as an AppImage but will eventually ship through Steam.

Users can drive the panel with system stats or custom layouts designed in Lunacy, an open-source Figma alternative. The project reflects Valve's continued openness to hardware tinkering, but the technical barrier — firmware flashing, AppImage compilation, surface-mount soldering — limits it to experienced makers rather than mainstream Steam Machine owners.

This release signals Valve's willingness to support community hardware development around its platform, yet the steep skill floor means the Inkterface will remain a niche enthusiast project unless a third party packages it as a finished product.
