The company polled its Discord community for feedback on prototypes, including a large monochrome e-ink screen, a smaller color e-ink display with controls, and a large color dot matrix panel.

The monochrome e-ink design emerged as the favorite in the initial poll, securing 49% of the votes. While Jsaux asked which version to launch first, the phrasing suggests all three might eventually see production. However, the dot matrix version faced significant backlash, with 75% of users deeming its design unacceptable due to its reliance on external power via a USB-C cable.

This development follows Valve contractor instructions for a DIY e-ink Steam Deck faceplate, indicating continued community interest in custom hardware for the handheld. Jsaux's move could signal a growing market for third-party Steam Deck accessories that offer enhanced functionality or unique aesthetics.
