Valve Confirms Steam Deck 2 Is Coming—But Don't Hold Your Breath

Valve has officially confirmed the Steam Deck 2 is in active development. In a recent comment to IGN, developer Pierre-Loup Griffais said the company is "hard at work" on the successor to its popular handheld, though he declined to provide any concrete details or a potential release window. The new device will draw on lessons learned from Valve's previous hardware ventures, including the original Steam Controller and Steam Machine.

The company has previously indicated that Steam Deck 2 would require a sizeable performance leap over the current model. This suggests Valve may wait until AMD's RDNA 4 or 5 architecture reaches the right balance of efficiency, power, and pricing for a handheld form factor without sacrificing battery life. Rumors point to 2028 as a potential launch window, with the device possibly using off-the-shelf AMD silicon rather than a semi-custom APU.

That timeline could prove problematic as competition heats up. Sony is reportedly working on its own handheld, which would give Valve serious competition in the portable gaming space. Using standard AMD components rather than custom silicon would give Valve more flexibility to respond to new hardware releases and market conditions.
