Microsoft announced the removal of 3,200 jobs from divisions outside its Xbox arm, targeting the Commercial Business segment. The cuts bring the total to 4,800 employees, about 2.1% of the company’s global workforce.

Executive Vice‑President Amy Coleman explained the moves in a jblog post, noting that while AI will not immediately replace the displaced workers, it is reshaping daily tasks. She urged employees to adapt and acquire new skills.

Xbox, already hit by a 1,600‑person layoff on July 6, faces an additional round that will add another 1,600 in the coming months. The company is spinning off studios such as Compulsion Games and Double Fine and may shut Arkane.

The cuts underscore Microsoft’s shift toward cost efficiency and AI integration. For gamers, studio closures could reduce studio output, while the broader tech sector may see accelerated automation of routine roles. Employees now face a labor market that demands continuous learning and flexibility.
