Nokian's Smart Studs Adapt to Weather Changes

Finnish tire maker Nokian Tires has unveiled the Hakkapeliitta 01, a winter tire with retractable studs that adjust as temperatures change. The tires use clever polymer science and robotic precision to insert each stud at an optimal angle, with center studs providing support and shoulder studs rotated horizontally for better steering precision.

Each stud is scanned and recorded in a database to ensure consistent protrusion across every tire. The innovation comes as climate change creates unpredictable road conditions with sudden freeze-thaw cycles replacing traditional winter patterns. While studded tires remain the most effective option for ice driving, they cause road damage and noise when snow and ice are absent.

Nokian claims the Hakkapeliitta 01 reduces road wear by up to 30 percent while improving ice grip by 10 percent and reducing noise by 1 decibel compared to the previous Hakkapeliitta 10 model. The tires also feature SilentDrive technology for additional interior noise reduction. Available in autumn 2026 across Nordic countries and North America, these tires address growing concerns about road preservation while maintaining winter performance.
