Tire RFID Tracking: Michelin, Continental Add Tech

Major tire manufacturers like Michelin and Continental are embedding RFID tracking tags in new tires to monitor their lifecycle from factory to disposal. These radio-frequency identification chips, fitted during manufacturing, track individual tires through warehouses, assembly lines, and service centers without requiring batteries.

According to Murata, the technology streamlines inventory management by enabling rapid scanning and identifying missing shipments. Vehicle manufacturers use the tags to verify correct tire fitting on assembly lines. Service centers can access tire history data including manufacturing dates and tread depths from cloud databases, while also checking for recalls.

With over 100 million RFID-equipped tires already on roads, the technology extends beyond performance tracking to end-of-life management. The tags help monitor tires through retreading processes or recycling, preventing fraudulent resale of worn tires as new. Major brands including Pirelli, Michelin, and Goodyear formed the GDSO association in 2022 to standardize global tire data management and access protocols.
