Mozilla's Thunderbolt AI Client Targets Enterprise Deployments

Mozilla has launched Thunderbolt, an AI client designed for self-hosted infrastructure with native apps available across Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, and the web. The client supports familiar AI interfaces including chat, search, research, automation, and cross-device workflows. Users can download the apps directly or build from React source code via GitHub.

MZLA Technologies, the Mozilla subsidiary formed in 2020 to manage Thunderbird, operates Thunderbolt with funding from Mozilla itself. The company is already courting enterprise clients for paid licensing and on-site deployments, though the GitHub page notes the software is "under active development" and undergoing security audits. This positions Thunderbolt as Mozilla's latest push into the AI space.

Thunderbolt builds on Mozilla's existing AI initiatives through Mozilla.ai, which backs open source tooling for external AI models and agents. The launch aligns with Mozilla's broader 2025 vision to "do for AI what we did for the web" by offering decentralized, open source AI services with more agency, diversity, and choice. The timing suggests Mozilla sees enterprise demand for AI solutions that aren't controlled by Big Tech.
