Thunderbird conducted hour-long conversations with 10 users to understand desktop preference management. The research aims to create a holistic strategy ensuring mobile settings feel like a natural extension of the workspace.

Key themes emerged: ecosystem trust rooted in open-source transparency and the Mozilla brand; set and forget customization during initial setup; desire to reduce clutter and cognitive noise; reliance on in-app search for navigation; treating the inbox as a to-do list; and terminology barriers even for advanced users.

Planned improvements include demystifying technical language, streamlining information architecture into task-oriented categories, adding context to privacy and security settings, modernizing the UI, and enhancing accessibility based on community audit.

The team is finalizing project scope, mapping streamlined architecture, and designing holistic desktop and mobile configurations. Thunderbird thanks participants and will share updates soon.
