Google has temporarily removed an AI image generation tool from Google Earth after concerns arose about its potential to create and spread fake satellite imagery. The tool, which allowed users to generate AI-modified images within Google Earth, was flagged for its ability to produce content that could undermine trust in authentic satellite photos.

Even before its removal, the tool faced scrutiny. While Google's Synth ID watermarking system showed promise in detecting AI-generated content, it encountered limitations and could be bypassed. Experts questioned the reliance on Synth ID and Google's AI tools, noting that sophisticated fakes often bypass clean file transfers.

Concerns were amplified when the AI tool was used to depict harmful scenes, such as a bomb crater in a hospital, despite Google's policies against generating harmful AI content. The ability to easily create AI-modified satellite imagery also posed a risk to journalists and researchers combating misinformation.

Google stated it is "rolling back this feature in Google Earth while we work on implementing stronger guardrails," indicating a potential future return. Experts recommend using multiple sources, like Europe's Copernicus Sentinel-2, for verifying satellite imagery.
