Security researchers are concerned that Google's new AI-powered image editing tool, integrated into Google Earth, will exacerbate the spread of disinformation by simplifying the creation of fake satellite imagery. The tool, powered by the Nano Banana model, allows users to "virtually reimagine anywhere in the world" by manipulating satellite views with AI-generated content.

Experts in open-source intelligence (Osint), who rely on Google Earth for verifying information from sensitive locations, warn that this feature undermines its credibility as an authentication benchmark. "The fake is now being made inside the thing people use to check whether pictures are real," stated Osint expert Henk van Ess. Demonstrations on X showed fabricated images of a bomb crater in Gaza and nuclear plants in Iran.

This development comes amid growing anxieties about AI-generated images circulating on social media. Analysts like Brady Africk note that the integration into Google Earth makes these fakes harder to detect, as they are anchored to real satellite data. While Google states that images will be watermarked, experts like Africk caution that this may not be enough to prevent widespread deception as users often share content without verification.
