GM Electric Truck Plant Idles, 1,300 Laid Off as Demand Craters

General Motors has idled its Factory Zero plant in Hamtramck, Michigan, and laid off 1,300 workers temporarily. The plant, which builds the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Cadillac Escalade IQ, and GMC Hummer EVs, halted production two weeks ago. It will resume on April 13th, 2024.

This follows GM's earlier permanent layoff of 1,700 workers at EV and battery plants in Michigan and Tennessee in late October. The shift back to production comes after GM scaled back its electric vehicle ambitions, including idling the plant for a month before restarting with a single shift in December. Ford canceled its F-150 Lightning, and Ram never produced an electric pickup truck.
