Ford Recalls 4.4M Vehicles Over Trailer Software Bug

Ford is recalling 4.3 million trucks and SUVs to fix a software vulnerability in their integrated trailer brake module. The recall affects multiple models including the F-150, Ranger, Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator from model years 2021-2026. The issue could cause trailers to lose lights and brakes during startup.

According to Ford's recall notice, a race condition between the trailer module and vehicle systems can occur during initial power-up, potentially disabling trailer lights and brakes. The problem can also happen when vehicles wake from sleep mode without a connected trailer. Ford began investigating in October 2025 but initially decided against a recall until the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration intervened.

Ford says it has received 405 warranty claims related to this defect through early February 2026 but reports no accidents, injuries, or fires. Owners will be notified next month, and the software can be updated over-the-air in May. This massive recall adds to Ford's record-setting 2025 when the company issued 152 safety recalls affecting 13 million vehicles in the US, nearly twice the previous industry high.
