AT&T FirstNet Billing Glitch Hits Military Member with $6,196 Shock

Another AT&T FirstNet customer has been hit with a shocking $6,196 bill for just 3.1GB of data. A Florida military member received the charge for data usage at $2 per megabyte, nearly identical to a December 2024 incident involving a Texas police officer. Both customers had unlimited data plans but were incorrectly billed after switching to FirstNet service.

In the latest case, the bill showed a January 19 service change and a charge for "FN Data PPU 3,098MB at $2.00 per MB." The Texas officer's December bill had nearly the same wording and amount, with "Data Pay Per use 3,097MB at $2.00 per MB" totaling $6,194. Both customers initially struggled to get the charges reversed through normal customer service channels.

After Ars Technica contacted AT&T about the Florida case, the company removed the charge within hours. While AT&T fixed both bills, it hasn't explained what caused these nearly identical billing errors or whether it's made changes to prevent future mistakes. The repeated incidents suggest a systemic issue with FirstNet billing that remains unresolved.
