2026 Lexus RZ 550e Review: Improved EV Still Falls Short

Lexus has reworked its RZ electric SUV for 2026 with new motors, a larger battery, and NACS charging, hoping to address the shortcomings of its first EV attempt. The all-wheel-drive RZ 550e F Sport starts at $58,295 and features 402 hp from permanent magnet synchronous motors with silicon carbide electronics. While the interior boasts Ultrasuede upholstery and subtle animated lighting, the range remains disappointing at just 229 miles under optimal conditions.

During testing in chilly February weather, the RZ 550e averaged 2.5 miles/kWh, with only 88 miles of range remaining at 50 percent battery charge. The 77 kWh battery supports 11 kW AC charging and can DC fast-charge from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 30 minutes, though practical testing showed 26 minutes to charge from 43 to 80 percent. The car's compact dimensions (189 inches long, 74.6 inches wide, 64.4 inches tall) are complemented by aggressive F Sport styling including new bumpers, a distinctive front grille, and 20-inch aero wheels.

Despite improvements, the RZ 550e still struggles with range anxiety and a frustrating Tesla Supercharger experience that requires uncomfortably close positioning. While the interior quality and driving dynamics show Lexus's commitment to improvement, the electric SUV ultimately fails to match competitors in efficiency and charging convenience, leaving it as a likable but flawed option in the growing EV market.
