An AI-supervised remote entrance exam for UNAM, Mexico's largest university, proved disastrous, leading to 58,000 students being required to retake the test. This year, a staggering 16.3 percent of the nearly 160,000 applicants scored 100 or more on the 120-question exam, a significant jump from previous years where only 3.5 percent achieved such scores.

The surge in high scores prompted accusations of widespread cheating. In response, UNAM appointed an expert commission to investigate the remote testing process. The commission recommended administering a "control exam" to ensure fairness and equity in admissions.

This new in-person exam will affect not only those who secured a spot based on this year's results but also any applicant admitted based on minimum scores since 2021. The university rector apologized to honest students for the inconvenience but deemed the control exam necessary. Classes are scheduled to begin soon, necessitating a swift resolution.
