R&A Implements Fan Code of Conduct at The Open

The R&A is introducing a new fan code of conduct, "The Open Commitment," for this year's tournament at Royal Birkdale. This initiative aims to curb disruptive spectator behavior, which has drawn attention at recent events like the Ryder Cup and the U.S. Open. Spectators are warned that serious or repeated breaches of the code could lead to removal from the course.

The code outlines five principles: respecting players by remaining quiet during shots and celebrating appropriately; respecting the course by adhering to boundaries and supporting sustainability; respecting each other through courtesy and inclusivity, with a zero-tolerance policy for threatening or discriminatory behavior; and being aware of surroundings for safety. Mobile devices must be on silent, and photography is restricted.

This move comes after players like Sergio Garcia and Joaquin Niemann faced penalties for their conduct during majors this season. With over 300,000 spectators expected, a record number, the R&A seeks to maintain the unique atmosphere of The Open while ensuring a welcoming and memorable experience for all attendees. Sky Sports will provide extensive live coverage of the tournament.
