Golfers Face Abuse Linked to Gambling

Matt Fitzpatrick, the 2022 US Open champion, has highlighted a growing problem in golf: gambling-related abuse directed at players. Fitzpatrick described receiving messages of abuse from individuals connected to betting, particularly after poor performances or when a favored player struggles.

He noted that the ease of influencing outcomes in golf, such as shouting during a player's backswing or putting stroke, makes it a potential target for manipulation. This issue was evident during the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black and the Players Championship, where players faced hostile crowds.

As the 154th Open Championship approaches with a new code of conduct, Tommy Fleetwood acknowledged the challenge of balancing crowd atmosphere with respectful behavior. While generally positive, Fleetwood has experienced negative crowd interactions that, paradoxically, sometimes fueled his performance. The R&A's initiative aims to address fan conduct amidst these concerns.
