Golf misconduct penalties set for The Open

The Open will implement a strict code of conduct allowing officials to impose two-shot penalties for player misconduct. R&A chief Mark Darbon confirmed this follows incidents at the Masters where Sergio Garcia damaged a tee box and Bob MacIntyre was caught swearing. The four major tournaments have unified in addressing player behavior that undermines golf's integrity.

Previously, players faced only disqualification for serious breaches. Now, emotional outbursts during competition could directly impact scores at golf's premier events. The major tournaments have agreed on this approach, though professional tours haven't formalized similar policies yet. This represents a significant shift in how golf authorities manage on-course conduct.

Darbon also addressed the distance rollback plan limiting golf ball flight, originally set for 2028 but potentially delayed to 2030. The proposal to separate elite and recreational play was scrapped, meaning all golfers would be affected. Top players could see drives shortened by about 15 yards, though officials believe the change is necessary to protect golf's integrity.
