Menzies Wins Players Championship 23, Secures World Matchplay Spot

Cameron Menzies captured his first ranking title of 2026 at Players Championship 23, defeating Cristo Reyes 8-5 in Monday's final at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester. The 37-year-old Scot earned £15,000 and, crucially, locked in his place at the Betfred World Matchplay in Blackpool later this month. Menzies navigated a 128-player field with a run that included whitewash victories over Carl Sneyd — averaging over 102 — and Cor Dekker, plus a statement 6-3 win over Josh Rock and a 7-5 semi-final comeback against Dave Chisnall.

The final swung violently. Menzies missed chances to lead 4-1 before Reyes broke throw with a 20-darter. The Ayrshire native responded with legs of 12, 15, and 12 darts to surge 6-2, only for Reyes to reel off three straight. A ten-darter put Menzies one leg away, and he closed out the match on his own throw.

This victory carries profound personal weight. At December's World Darts Championship, Menzies punched a table after a first-round loss, severely injuring his hand and requiring hospital treatment. "I never thought I'd win one of these again," he admitted, crediting a life coach and stable home life for his turnaround. His form had dipped so low he'd won just one board final all year before this week.

The result reshapes the World Matchplay qualifying picture. With Menzies now confirmed, the focus shifts to Tuesday's Players Championship 24 where Damon Heta and Daryl Gurney battle for remaining spots. Joe Cullen's nine-dart finish in a 6-3 loss to Jack Tweddell underscored the depth of a tour where even perfection isn't always enough.
