Menzies, described as one of the most entertaining players, led Humphries 3-2 early on, but Humphries responded with a 167 checkout. Menzies then went on a four-leg run to lead 7-3, but Humphries mounted a comeback. Ultimately, Menzies' inspired 170 finish proved decisive, setting up a second-round clash with Ross Smith.

"No one gave me hope! I didn't give myself hope but I finally won a game at the Winter Gardens," Menzies stated, calling it his biggest win. Analyst Wayne Mardle lauded Menzies' composure under pressure, calling it his "greatest moment."
