Former England captain Lewis Moody announced a 500‑mile cycle from Newcastle to Twickenham to raise money for Motor Neuron Disease research. The ride starts at Newcastle Red Bulls on June 14 and finishes delivering the match ball for the PREM Rugby Final on June 20. Moody, diagnosed last October, says the challenge keeps him focused for the fans.

Moody credits past rugby heroes Doddie Weir and Rob Burrow for inspiring his campaign. He joined the MY NAME'S DODDIE FOUNDATION, which has led MND awareness after their own diagnoses. The foundation’s work focuses on funding research and supporting families, giving Moody a clear partnership to amplify his own fundraising efforts for the rugby community.

During the six‑month campaign, Moody stays mindful of his condition. He reports only minor hand weakness and stresses the importance of pacing. The ride will test his endurance while keeping the focus on a clear goal: to prove that people with MND can still push limits and inspire others to act for future research funding.

Moody’s initiative brings together former teammates from the 2003 World Cup squad and rivals turned friends. By cycling 500 miles, he hopes to galvanise the rugby community and channel public support into the foundation’s research budget. The event underscores the sport’s capacity to unite around health causes and offers a tangible legacy beyond the pitch.
