Rugby vs Cricket T20 Charity Match for MNDA

England and Saracens hooker Jamie George will captain a rugby team against Somerset professionals in a T20 charity match on 19 August at the County Ground in Taunton. The fixture, organised for Lewis Gregory's testimonial year, raises money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

George's "Team Rugby" includes current and former England internationals Owen Farrell, Elliot Daly, Ben Earl and Max Malins. Somerset's side features Jamie Overton and former all-rounder Peter Trego. The idea emerged when George met injured Somerset batter Tom Kohler-Cadmore at a T20 match earlier this season.

While the rugby players boast hundreds of international caps, their cricket experience varies. Daly represented Surrey at age-group level and Earl played for Kent Under-15s. George, 35, plans a Daren Sammy-style role batting at nine or ten without bowling.

Both communities have been affected by MND. Former England bowler David 'Syd' Lawrence died in 2025, while Doddie Weir passed away in 2022. Former Gloucester lock Ed Slater and ex-England captain Lewis Moody live with the disease. George said the sports "look after our own" to raise awareness and find a cure.
