Phil Neville fired as Portland Timbers manager after poor results

Phil Neville is out as Portland Timbers manager after two and a half seasons, the MLS club announced Monday. Phil Neville compiled a 27W-31L-24D record with the Timbers but leaves them in 13th place on the Western Conference table. While he guided Portland to the playoffs in 2024 and again in 2025, the broader picture fell short of what the club expected.

Neville joined the Timbers in November 2023 after managing Inter Miami from 2021 to 2023. His first season produced a 12W-11L-11D record and ended a playoff drought dating back to 2021. Last year he beat Real Salt Lake in the Wild Card but lost to San Diego FC in the Round One Best-of-3 Series. GM Ned Grabavoy said pointed offseason discussions about improvement didn't produce the needed results.

Neville acknowledged the outcome directly in his farewell statement: "I realize we are in a results business, and the results haven't been to the expectation of this football club." He thanked the Timbers Army, staff, and players for their support throughout his tenure.

The Timbers will now begin a search for a new manager while returning to action on July 16 against Seattle Sounders following the World Cup break.
