The Portland Timbers have appointed Martí Cifuentes as their new head coach, signing him to a three-year contract through the 2028-29 Major League Soccer season. Cifuentes, 44, comes to Portland after a recent stint as coach of Leicester City in the EFL Championship and previously managed Queens Park Rangers.

"I have always followed MLS, and it has long been an ambition of mine to experience this league," Cifuentes stated. "To have the chance to do so at a club like Portland, with such an incredible fanbase and an exciting group of players, is truly special."

Cifuentes replaces Phil Neville, who departed the Timbers in late May. The Timbers currently hold a 5-8-2 record this season. Owner Merritt Paulson expressed confidence in Cifuentes, describing him as "a young, analytical leader." Jack Cassidy will continue as interim head coach until Cifuentes' arrival, following a recent 5-1 victory over Seattle Sounders FC.
