Bay FC Criticizes Earthquakes' Wilkinson Hire

NWSL side Bay FC has publicly criticized the San Jose Earthquakes' hiring of Gavin Wilkinson as a consultant, stating his past actions are inconsistent with standards they hold for soccer leadership.

Wilkinson, 52, was fired in 2022 from his roles with the Portland Thorns FC and Portland Timbers following the Yates Report, which detailed systemic abuse by multiple NWSL managers. While not directly sanctioned, Wilkinson provided a positive reference for former Thorns manager Paul Riley in 2016, despite Riley's involvement in sexual coercion allegations against players Mana Shim and Sinead Farrelly.

Wilkinson was also linked to a domestic violence allegation in May 2021 involving then-Timbers midfielder Andy Polo. The Timbers failed to report the incident to MLS as required, resulting in a $25,000 fine.

Bay FC emphasized their commitment to safe, inclusive environments and stood with players and survivors. The Earthquakes defended the hire, calling Wilkinson a temporary consultant through year-end while they conduct a GM search to support Bruce Arena. Fan groups at Pay Pal Park displayed a "GW Out" banner, expressing strong disapproval of the appointment.
