Former Chelsea captain César Azpilicueta confirmed his retirement at 36, ending a 20‑year professional career. He began in Pamplona with Osasuna before moving to Marseille, where he collected two French League Cups and a Super Cup. A 44‑cap Spain international, Azpilicueta joined Chelsea in 2012, launching the longest spell of his career.

During his 11‑year stint at Stamford Bridge he logged 508 appearances, winning two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup and back‑to‑back Europa League trophies. He captained the Blues to their 2021 Champions League triumph, sealing his status as a club legend and amassed over 30 trophies overall.

Azpilicueta spent two seasons with Atletico Madrid before signing for Sevilla last summer, where he has featured in 16 LaLiga matches this term. In his farewell post on X he thanked teammates, coaches and staff across six clubs, calling the journey a privilege. Sevilla will now adjust their back line without his veteran presence.

His retirement closes a chapter for a player who featured in Spain’s 2018 World Cup squad and contributed to the national side’s Euro 2020 run. While no longer adding caps, his professionalism set a standard for younger defenders at club and country level. Azpilicueta leaves the game as one of its most consistent performers.
