The U.S. Hockey League announced expansion plans Thursday targeting California, Nevada and Arizona. The 16-team Tier 1 junior league signed a memorandum of understanding with stakeholders, though specific franchise numbers and timelines remain unclear pending a June 24 reveal. This marks the first expansion since 2014 when Madison joined the league.

The move comes through partnerships with USA Hockey and the NHL, dramatically extending the league's geographic reach beyond its traditional Midwest footprint spanning the Dakotas to Ohio. Commissioner Glenn Hefferan emphasized the expansion creates opportunities beyond just adding teams, opening access to growing western hockey markets.

Los Angeles Kings president Luc Robitaille praised the collaborative effort to grow hockey in western regions. The timing follows NCAA rule changes allowing Canadian Hockey League players to compete in U.S. colleges, intensifying competition between the USHL and the 61-team CHL for top prospects who previously had to choose leagues to maintain eligibility.

The USHL currently produces the nation's premier developmental talent, including 21 players from the U.S. men's gold medal team at the Milan Cortina Games. Western expansion positions the league to capture new player pools while strengthening its pipeline to college and professional hockey.
