The Detroit Red Wings traded goaltending prospect Sebastian Cossa to the Utah Mammoth on Friday in exchange for the 23rd overall pick in this year's draft. Cossa, who was selected 15th overall in 2021, spent last season with Grand Rapids where he posted a 26-8-4 record with a 2.33 goals-against average and .915 save percentage.

Detroit immediately used that 23rd selection to draft Kamloops Blazers winger JP Hurlbert. The move made sense for the Red Wings organization as they already have another promising netminder in Trey Augustine. Detroit's second-round pick in 2023 went 24-9-1 with a 2.11 GAA and .929 save percentage at Michigan State before turning pro.

Cossa joins a Utah team that reached the playoffs in their second season since relocating from Arizona. He could compete with Karel Vejmelka for playing time after Vejmelka led all goaltenders in games played during the 2025-26 season. The 38-20-3 record with a 2.75 GAA helped establish the Mammoth as a legitimate playoff contender.

This trade addresses goaltending depth for both organizations. Detroit accelerates their rebuild by adding another scoring prospect while Utah strengthens their crease with a proven AHL performer who could push Vejmelka in a tandem situation.
