Bruins trade draft picks for winger JJ Peterka

The Boston Bruins have acquired winger JJ Peterka from the Utah Mammoth, ending a brief two‑year stint with the expansion club. Boston surrendered its 2026 first‑round pick (No. 23) and a 2028 first‑rounder originally belonging to the Florida Panthers, top‑10 protected. Peterka, 24, arrives as the league’s only German‑coached team under Marcel Goc.

Utah signed Peterka to a five‑year, $38.5 million deal after trading forward Josh Doan and defenseman Michael Kesselring to Buffalo for his restricted free agency rights. In Utah he posted 25 goals, two fewer than his 2024‑25 Buffalo total, while ice time dropped from 18:11 to 15:59 per game. He enters Boston with 92 goals and 105 assists in 320 games.

Boston, which ranked 10th in goals per game last season (3.27), hopes Peterka’s size and German‑league experience—he previously played for Salzburg EC under assistant Matt McIlvane—adds depth to a forward corps lacking consistent scoring. If he regains his Buffalo production, the Bruins could tighten their offensive rankings without sacrificing future draft capital.

Peterka’s contract runs through the 2030‑31 season, guaranteeing Boston $7.7 million per year. The trade signals Boston’s willingness to part with premium draft assets to accelerate a push for the Stanley Cup, and his immediate impact will be measured by whether he can sustain a point‑per‑game pace in Boston’s top six.
