Panthers Trade for Jacob Markstrom, End Bobrovsky Era in Goalie Shuffle

The Florida Panthers acquired veteran goaltender Jacob Markstrom from the New Jersey Devils in a five-player deal that sends Evan Rodrigues, Jesper Boqvist and Ben Steeves to New Jersey. Markstrom, 36, brings a $6 million cap hit on a two-year contract but posted a disappointing .883 save percentage last season with the Devils, his worst numbers since 2014.

Originally drafted by Florida in 2008, Markstrom returns to the organization where Roberto Luongo serves as a special adviser. The move clears the way for Sergei Bobrovsky to become an unrestricted free agent after completing his seven-year, $10 million cap hit contract. Bobrovsky, 37, seeks a new deal above market value despite ranking 26th in save percentage among goalies over the past two seasons.

Rodrigues departs after contributing 11 goals and 20 assists in 69 games last season, his third with Florida. Boqvist returns to New Jersey, where he began his career as a second-round pick. Devils GM Sunny Mehta knows both players well from his time as Panthers assistant GM.

Florida also acquired goalie Akira Schmid from Vegas this week, signaling their commitment to a younger crease. Markstrom's return gives the Panthers experience between the pipes while they transition away from their championship-winning netminder.
