Oilers Close in on Mike Babcock as Head Coach Despite Controversy

The Edmonton Oilers are finalizing a deal with veteran coach Mike Babcock to replace Kris Knoblauch, according to multiple sources. Babcock, 63, brings extensive experience including a Stanley Cup victory with Detroit in 2008 and ranks 12th all-time with 700 career wins. The Oilers have consulted their core leadership group and owner Daryl Katz as they pursue this coaching change.

Babcock's last NHL opportunity with Columbus ended abruptly in 2023 when he resigned amid an NHLPA investigation into privacy violations involving players' cellphones. Team president John Davidson acknowledged they "got it wrong" in that hiring. The NHLPA has confirmed Edmonton's outreach regarding Babcock's current status and any ongoing investigations into his conduct.

Edmonton's pursuit comes after their first-round playoff exit to Anaheim, prompting them to seek veteran leadership. They initially targeted Bruce Cassidy, but Vegas blocked the move since he remains under contract. Connor McDavid's recent two-year extension makes this coaching hire critical for the Oilers' championship window.

Despite not coaching since 2019, Babcock offers championship pedigree as a member of the IIHF Triple Gold Club. His Olympic gold medals with Canada in 2010 and 2014, plus his world championship success, provide the experience Edmonton desperately needs if the NHL and NHLPA approve the hiring.
