Maple Leafs Fire GM Over Culture Issues

Toronto Maple Leafs fired GM Brad Treliving on Monday, with CEO Keith Pelley citing cultural misalignment and structural issues as the reasons. The decision came with eight games remaining in a season where Toronto sits seventh in the Atlantic Division with a 32-30-13 record, on track to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2016-17. Pelley stated, "I honestly believe that we didn't have the alignment, we didn't have the culture, we didn't have the structure that we needed to be successful."

Assistant GMs Brandon Pridham and Ryan Hardy will manage the team while Pelley conducts an "exhaustive" search for a "data-centric" manager. He plans to have a replacement by late May or early June, with the future of coach Craig Berube to be determined by the new leadership. Pelley emphasized evidence-based decision-making following Toronto FC's recent overhaul, calling this "the most important decision I'm likely to make in my time at MLSE."

Despite the disappointing season, Pelley believes in the team's "foundational pieces" and doesn't want a full rebuild. The new leadership will need to maximize the current roster while acquiring more draft picks and prospects. Pelley stated he's comfortable with any approach that gives Toronto the best chance to win the Stanley Cup, adding, "We need more draft choices. We need more prospects."
