Maple Leafs Fire GM Treliving After Disappointing Season

The Toronto Maple Leafs have fired general manager Brad Treliving after a disappointing season that saw the team on track to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2016-17. The organization announced the decision Monday night, with Keith Pelley, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, citing the need for "a new course" to achieve their ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup.

Treliving, who joined the Leafs in May 2023 after replacing Kyle Dubas, faced mounting pressure as Toronto struggled this season with a 31-30-13 record heading into Monday night's game against the Anaheim Ducks. His tenure included a first-round playoff exit to Boston in 2024, which led to the firing of coach Sheldon Keefe. Treliving then hired Craig Berube, who initially brought success by advancing the team to the second round in 2025, but this season's collapse proved too much to overcome.

A critical misstep during Treliving's tenure was his inability to re-sign star forward Mitch Marner, who was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade deal last July. The loss of Toronto's leading scorer, who tallied 221 goals and 741 points in 657 games with the team, significantly weakened the roster. With the Leafs facing elimination from playoff contention Monday night against Anaheim, the timing of Treliving's dismissal underscores the urgency for change as Toronto searches for a new general manager to chart a path back to contention.
